It has been two weeks since Clyde Sutter and his fiance, Melinda Braddock, returned from London, England and their unexpected and unannounced visit to their old stomping grounds, Melinda’s legacy, The Glenn Braddock Wrestling School. Melinda was welcomed back with open arms. Sutter, on the other hand, was met with cold stares, rude remarks, and specifically head trainer Mark O’Brian demanding that he leave the property. It was not the most pleasant of experiences for the couple; it was very awkward. It was a necessary trial and tribulation for the pair, because Sutter had a suspicion that he could find answers at the Braddock Wrestling School. Clyde’s partner in crime, Joey, had been stalked for months now. Even the place he had been staying at was broken into and ransacked. Sutter’s first reaction was that it was Joey’s problem, not his. But The Assassin now believes that perhaps he is the target, not Joey. Joey, after all, was staying in Clyde’s apartment in Charlotte, North Carolina. Could this individual be targeting Sutter and Joey is just an unfortunate victim in the crossfire? It is certainly a plausible theory, one that Sutter wants to pursue.
The early evening light drifted lazily through the wide bay windows of the living room, casting golden shafts across the polished hardwood floor and the edge of a soft, ivory-colored sectional sofa. Outside, the Miami heat still clung to the air like a second skin, but within the house it was cool. Clyde Sutter sat on the edge of the sectional, leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees, hands loosely clasped together. His long black hair, usually tied back in a rough ponytail or tucked beneath a baseball cap, was loose now, falling across his shoulders in slightly tangled waves. He wore a faded black T-shirt, stretched slightly at the collar, and jeans that had clearly seen better days, the knees worn to a near bare state. Melinda Braddock stood nearby, only a few feet from him, her arms loosely crossed, not in defiance but in quiet worry. The light from the setting sun caught in her long blonde hair, illuminating the waves with a honey-colored glow as it spilled down her back in effortless elegance. She wore a pale blue tank top and soft cotton lounge pants. Her blue eyes, usually alive with humor or fierce determination, now searched his face for a trace of clarity, some answer to the unspoken fear hanging between them. There was a vulnerability to her posture, a gentleness rarely shown to anyone but him. Clyde’s foot tapped against the floor with a slow, restless rhythm. Melinda glanced down, then back to his face, her lips parting slightly as if to speak, then closing again. The storm hadn’t come yet, but both of them could feel it stirring, invisible and inevitable, just beyond the horizon of this quiet room.
“Clyde, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
Melinda stares long and hard at her man, gazing deep into his soul as only a lover could do. She has known him for a very long time. They have been through good times and bad times. Most importantly, she knows when he is hiding something and right now she is certain that he is hiding something from her. He has not been the same since their return from London, England. The Third Generation Goddess makes her way over towards the sectional and sits down next to The Assassin.
“You have been acting strange ever since we returned from London.”
“Rise To Greatness is the grandest event of them all.” He remarks slowly, quietly, and with little to no emotion. “It is my second Rise To Greatness. You are making your Rise To Greatness debut. In less than a week you and I have a lot of pressure riding on our shoulders, my love. We both need this win. The pressure is mounting upon us to perform at our best. I do fear that I did not spend our time in London at your late grandfather’s wrestling school wisely.”
“Is that so?” Melinda asks, staring at him skeptically.
“Yes.”
“Bullshit, Clyde.” Braddock shakes her head. “First of all, it isn’t like we are going to be in any real trouble. This is just Chance Owens and Kelsai Adamson. We have owned them Taking Hold of the Flame. They are emotional, they are angry to the point that they will make a mistake. You and I?” She shakes her head. “We don’t make mistakes. We will capitalize on theirs.”
“You sound so certain of yourself, my love.”
“Because I know what you are capable of.” Melinda remarks, planting a kiss on his cheek. “You are a former MWE Television Champion, MWE Riot Champion, GCW World Tag Team Champion, and former SCW Television Champion. You are a very capable wrestler.”
“I was thrown out of your family’s wrestling school.”
“And they were wrong.” Braddock states pointedly. “You have proven them wrong ever since you made your debut. You have silenced all of the doubters. And do not sit there and pretend as if you don’t believe this because I know you do. I look into those gorgeous eyes and I can tell that you love proving people like my mother wrong each and every time you set foot inside of the ring. I know you look forward to proving her wrong again as we compete at Rise To Greatness this year.”
“What are you saying?” Sutter asks.
“I am saying that the pressure of Rise To Greatness does not bother you. Our match against Chance and Kelsai does not bother you. And why should it?” Melinda smirks knowingly. “Fate is in control, am I right? What happens at Rise To Greatness is the will of Fate. At least, that’s what you always tell me.”
Clyde Sutter sits up straight and stares deep into Melinda’s loving eyes. He wanted to shield her from his own concerns and nerves but he can tell that his efforts were a failure. He should have known better. This beautiful young woman is just too smart, too intuitive, and she knows him too well. There was no way he would be able to fool her. Fate’s Chosen Assassin finally breaks his stoic gaze and forces a smile on his face.
“I was foolish to believe that I could pull the wool over your eyes, my love.”
“Exactly.” Braddock remarks. “When we promised to try again, to get back together, we agreed to be honest with each other. I know this match at Rise To Greatness isn’t what is bothering you, because every other Breakdown leading up to this point has not shaken you in the slightest. Yet for some reason, after we got back from London two weeks ago, you have been acting strange. Something happened at my family’s wrestling school that bothered you.” She reaches out and takes his hands, holding them tightly. “Please, tell me.”
“Very well. Do you recall why we visited the Glenn Braddock Wrestling School in the first place?” He smirks. “It most definitely was not a mere social call.”
“You definitely weren’t well received, that’s for sure.” She snickers. “Mark wanted to kick your ass.”
“I knew full well that I would get a very cold reception, that I was not welcome there. Yet I demanded that I come with you. It had nothing to do with our upcoming match at Rise To Greatness. We could have trained, worked out, and prepared anywhere for that purpose.”
“You said we were there because of your friend Joey.” Melinda sighs and shrugs her shoulders. “And you never did tell me how Joey has any connection to my family’s wrestling school.”
“That’s because he doesn’t.”
“Then why were we there?”
“Joey had been staying in my apartment in Charlotte. That apartment was broken into and ransacked. I jumped to the conclusion that it must have been my sister Lilith. Joey, of course, thought so as well. It made perfect sense, considering I had him dig up dirt on her, enough to implicate her for the murder of Archie Van Stanton.”
“But it wasn’t your sister, was it?” Melinda asks. Clyde shakes his head.
“No, it wasn’t. At least, I do not believe it was. She has been shut off from most, if not all, of her resources. Even if she wanted to target me or my friends, she would have little means of doing so. I needed to explore other possible suspects, other people whom I have wronged in the past who might have the ability to take revenge and might be willing to take those steps.”
“Whoa, wait a second,” Melinda shakes her head, looking utterly confused “you think someone at my family’s gym did this?”
“No one working there. Mark O’Brian may hate me but he would confront me face to face. And your mother…well…she prefers to use legal means to be spiteful.”
“Yeah, like how she used her connections to try and keep promotions from hiring you.” Melinda rolls her eyes.
“But there is someone who was a former student at your grandfather’s wrestling school who might wish to exact a form of revenge against me.” Clyde states. “His name is Callum Slater.”
“Never heard of him.” Melinda remarks, shaking her head.
“That’s because he was already gone before you began training there.” Sutter answers. “Callum and I started around the same time. We quickly grew to be friends because of our similar backgrounds. We were both street thugs looking to better ourselves, looking to make a legitimate living through professional wrestling.”
“Why did he quit?” Melinda asks.
“Take a wild guess.”
“Oh…” Melinda’s eyes grow wide as it dawns on her, as she realizes what Clyde means “...I am sorry…”
“You remember all too well what kind of person I was back then. You may also hold ill will towards your mother for trying to blackball me from wrestling, but she had every right to do so. I was kicked out of your grandfather’s school for a good reason; I was violent, excessively violent, and far too aggressive. I beat on trainers and students. Callum Slater was one student who I had hurt and injured due to my violent nature.” In a rare moment of emotion, Sutter seems to show regret, even remorse, as he recalls these events. “I injured him badly, my love, to the point that he was forced to quit Braddock Wrestling School, quit his training. For all I knew, I never did complete his training, he never did get to better himself by becoming a wrestler.”
“Clyde, listen,” Melinda can tell that her man is taking his very hard, so she places a loving, comforting hand on his back “you were a different person back then. You have changed since then. You sought out the help you needed to get your anger and violence under control. You have paid for your sins tenfold. You do not need to continue beating yourself up over the past.”
“Callum Slater was a street thug like me.” Sutter remarks. “Like me, he could have changed his ways and bettered himself, but thanks to me that never happened.”
“So you think Callum is behind this?” Melinda asks. “You think he broke into your Charlotte apartment and ransacked it?”
“It makes sense.” Clyde nods his head. “Without wrestling to better himself, he likely remained a street thug and all he knew was street justice. That apartment was in my name. He likely broke in thinking he was harming me. He had no idea Joey was there. He didn’t even know who Joey was.”
“You are convinced that this Callum Slater, a guy you met at my grandfather’s gym, who you injured, is responsible?” Melinda sounds skeptical. “Do you have any proof?”
“No…” he admits “...but it is what I would do, what the old me would do. Which is why I suspect him.”
“It is sweet that you care about your friend, Joey, and it shows how much you have changed that you are willing to go to such lengths to try and find out who or what is behind these recent incidents.” Melinda shakes her head. “But you cannot act without any real evidence. The best thing you can do is go to the police.”
“I suppose you are right.” Clyde sighs deeply. “But still, it bothers me knowing that this is all because of a mistake I made in the past, a ghost of my past that has come to haunt me in my present.”
“You think.” Melinda quickly says sternly. “You do not know for sure. And you need to be certain before you go and do something reckless.” She kisses him on his lips. “What I DO know for sure is that you and I are going to Rise To Greatness in a few days. We are facing Chance and Kelsai.”
“Indeed.” Sutter says, grinning once again, devilishly. “It would please me to no end to make sure that your Rise To Greatness debut is a successful one.”
“Then let’s focus on that, ok? Let’s focus on making Chance and Kelsai regret ever provoking us.”
