Deanna’s eyes felt heavy – not an uncommon feeling – causing her to blink a few more times and sip from one of Selena’s Monster-Energy drinks, the Zero-Sugar flavour – for lack of a better word – sliding on her tongue and making her wonder (not for the first time)...

How can she drink this stuff as much as she does?

For a moment, the redhead worried that her ex-wife, current-lover was bound to have a heart-attack or something with how much caffeine she consumed and how little she slept.

The villain of SCW... Deanna sighed sadly at the thought as morning sunlight slanted through the blinds, she had put them up in the kitchen to avoid getting too much of a headache this early. Still, the odd sunbeam did manage to catch the rising steam of pancake batter that wafted in front of her. The air smelled of cinnamon, syrup, bacon, and , admittedly, slightly burned toast.

Still counts as breakfast! the wrestler thought with determination as she flipped a pancake, trying to refocus herself. It did not take long for the reason for all this to creep up on her.

Lack of progress... Boo hoo... came the damn voice in her mind – The Heart of Vail. Still, there was no denying the truth it spoke. Deanna had been... decently?... progressing in SCW – with the Shot of Adrenaline Tournament being her guide/support. True, she wasn’t really part of the segments or big feuds these days... hell, she wasn’t even on the pay-per-view last weekend, but she didn’t have to be. She had the tournament to focus on and being more drama-free as the last few weeks had been with her only having to focus on the tournament, she was grateful for it!

It was simple. It was manageable. It let her prioritize her goal of winning the whole SoA – being in the top form necessary to do it, which she knew she would need if any of her matches became for the Adrenaline championship.

But while progress was okay at work... there was little to be had in her family, which was the reason for all of this, from the pancakes to mental tirades. While there had been that ‘promise’ of remarrying Selena if she succeeded – which was motivation in its own right – Deanna still hadn’t made any progress in healing the Snow Queen, nor repairing the rift between Selena and their eldest daughter. And she had tried so many ways! From discussions to outings for just the two of them. Nothing had worked! Elsianna still wouldn’t talk to Selena beyond insults and Selena was too scared of making things worse and driving their daughter away to another smoker... or worse...

Or worse indeed...

The sound of her phone buzzing broke her thoughts, the device vibrating from where it lay balanced on a slant against the flour jar. Startled, Deanna quickly checked the phone with her free hand, the other sliding the finished pancake onto a stack of them nearby her.

Remember—cardio before drills. You’re not twenty anymore, Frost.

Quickly, Deanna’s emerald eyes shot left and right to ensure no one was spying on her before thumbing a quick reply with the non-spatula-holding hand, a quick ‘Will do’ before turning the screen off and almost slamming the phone onto the counter, her heart unnecessarily racing.

Oh, this is cute! came that infernal voice. It’s like you’re cheating on your Snow-doll!

The redhead growled at the mere thought. She would never! Not in a million years! Not for a million dollar! Change that to a billion for both!

Even so, the redhead could not deny that she was hiding this from Selena. It had started a little over a month ago. With her struggle against Spencer Pryce, and his subsequent elimination (and two free points for the majority of the contestants), Deanna had spent the first few days following the tournament’s announcement trying to think of any other way to better her chances at winning it. While some saw it as ‘fun’ or a chance to ‘flex’ and some even saw it as a waste of their time or had zero interest in it, the tournament was all the young Frost could think about. She needed to win it. She had to win it.

The solution came one night as she had been scrolling along TikTok. Another advertisement – this one about ‘being fit and ready by X number of months’. She’d seen so many of them it was almost eye-rolling, but it had given her an idea. For as long as she had been a wrestler, she had only been trained by Selena. Not a problem when your partner is one of the greatest wrestlers in the world today, but... it was still only one opinion, and with all the drama loaded into their lives...

Before the redhead had realized it, she had recruited and hired a personal trainer. She had stumbled upon the woman’s ‘fitness-trainer’ advertisement and something about it seemed... right? The woman wasn’t a wrestler, but that’s not what Deanna wanted.  She didn’t want to learn more ‘ring moves’. She wanted her strength and speed back. She wanted her reflexes back. She wanted to be... wanted to be...

This just might be Deanna’s tournament to lose the further in we get!

That was it! Devon Kayl’s words had nailed it. She wanted to be as good as a few people were starting to believe she was. She didn’t WANT to lose this tournament. She didn’t want to lose to Kimberly. Or Dexter. Or anyone. And so far, the training had helped these past few weeks. Still, it did nothing to help her be up THIS early in the damn morning...

With a tired chuckle, the redhead started another pancake. Was she guilty about hiding her training from Selena? A little. But if she had to stay out of the Snow Queen’s business in SCW, then she had a right to privacy of her own business too! And after nine months of therapy rooms and silence - Nine months of living inside her own head while the world of SCW moved on without her – it felt good to have more and more things that were ‘just hers’.

She heard the footsteps behind before she heard the voice. “Mom,” Elsianna’s voice cut through her thoughts. “The pancakes are burning.” she added flatly as she wobbled into the kitchen with her crutches.

Hearing her words, Deanna cursed softly under her breath and attended the ‘slightly overdone’ pancake. “I’ll eat that one.” she settled before returning her attention to her daughter. “Morning, sweetheart.” she tried. “Did I wake you?”

From where she sat at the corner of the table, Elsianna shook her head, placing her crutches down beside her and immediately pulling out her cellphone. Her own platinum-blonde hair was tied in a high ponytail and she still wore her dark-green pyjamas.

“I didn’t smell anything till after I was up.” she said without looking up. “Carbo-loading for the tournament?”

Deanna gave a roll of her eyes before turning off the stove. “I do still cook breakfast for you and your brother and sister when I can.” she replied, wiping her hands on the nearby kitchen-towel.

“Uh-huh.” Elsianna nodded, eyes still on her screen, “I don’t think even David could eat that many pancakes.” she gestured with her finger towards the growing stack of flapjacks. “That’s not normal.”

“Who said I was normal?” Deanna fired back, earning a knowing ghost of a grin from the teen. VICTORY!

The feeling disappeared as the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway. Unlike Elsianna’s, some were energetic, some were quieter... and one set... Deanna fixated on that set: crisp, measured. She knew who’s steps those were.

“Morning.” Selena spoke slowly, gauging the scene before her eyes for a second before heading towards the fridge, quick to grab one of her energy drinks from it. “Who burned breakfast this time?”

“Mommy!” Amiliah announced from where she stood beside Selena, dressed in the cutest light-red pyjamas.

“Traitor.” Deanna pointed her spatula at the child in a mockingly stern tone. “I feed you, and this is how you repay me?”

She didn’t have to see it to know Selena had smiled a little at that, though she looked anyway – just in time to see the former world champion moving her drink to her face to cover it. “Burning breakfast? Must be a Frost family trait.” the Snow Queen offered with a sip of her drink. “Don’t tell anyone. 90% of the SCW roster would have a field day!”

“Oh, like you’re one to talk!” Deanna scoffed. “Remember that time you set off the smoke alarm?”
“That was an electrical malfunction.” Selena countered.
“It was the toaster.” Deanna threw back
“Still electrical.”

Deanna rolled her eyes at the ‘counter’, catching a similar expression from David as he walked past his sister and mother to sit at the table, though his eyeroll was more out of embarrassment. Ewww... Affection... Someday, he’ll understand. Deanna thought.

For a moment, as she took in this scene, it felt almost normal. A family scene so ordinary it almost erased the sharp edges beneath it.

Almost. came the mocking voice.

As if on cue, Selena’s smile faded and she cleared her throat. “So... people might be calling here today regarding what happened at Under Attack...” and just like that, it was as if all the joy had been sucked out of the room. “I’d appreciate it if nobody say anything to anyone.”

“Same as always.” Elsianna’s fork clinked hard against her plate. “Stay quiet. Don’t say anything that could make the dreaded ‘Snow Queen’ look anything less than ‘all powerful’.”

Hearing this, Deanna saw Selena’s eyes close, the woman taking a deep inhale and exhale. The redhead felt the tension before the next words came.

“That isn’t what I meant, Elsianna.” Selena tried, only to be interrupted by her daughter.
“Do you like being hated?”

The question brought a swift silence to the whole family, even Deanna was unsure how to proceed.

Slowly, Selena blinked, finally turning her gaze towards her eldest child. “It’s a job, Elsa.” she tried. “Everyone had a role to play. I...they... the audience just enjoy hating me, so...” she gave a lame shrug. “Someone has to play the bad guy.”

“So what?” the young girl shrugged her shoulders. “They make you one, and you just… go along with it.”

Selena’s jaw tightened at the accusation in Elsa’s tone. “That’s the business.” she answered sharply, earning a scoff from Elsianna.
“It’s fake,” she stated in disgust. “You’re fake.”

“Hey. Enough!” Deanna slammed her spatula onto the counter sharply, eyeing both mother and daughter. “Nobody here is fake, okay? Elsa, your mom has gone through a lot for her job, okay? Things you don’t really want to know about. But she’s in a...” she eyed Selena. “Rough place right now that we’re trying to fix.”

A second passed before Elsianna grumbled a single line – “I liked it better the way it was before...” – before retreating back to her phone and world of texting and videos. Thankfully, Selena didn’t press the matter either, the taller woman finally taking a seat and allowing Deanna to doll out the first servings of pancakes and bacon. The morning seemed to fall into a routine after that. Few words were exchanged as the ‘family’ worked through their breakfast before the kids were ushered away to get ready for school, leaving the Frost wives to clean the dishes. Even then, Deanna felt Selena’s presence moving in tandem with hers — not coordinated, exactly, but practised, like two people who used to dance to the same rhythm. Like something on automatic pilot.

And it warmed something in Deanna’s chest.

“Sorry.” Selena tried. “I didn’t mean to set Elsa off.” she tried to offer as she cleaned a plate. “I appreciate you trying to make a nice breakfast for us.”

“How did you-”
“Kind of obvious.” Selena shrugged simply. “First it was the obsessive cleaning, now this- not to mention the sex.”

The remark caught Deanna off guard for a second, the redhead turning her head to eye Selena’s piercing glare. Instead of blushing, the redhead simply shrugged her shoulders.

“Unrelated.” she answered honestly. “I mean, the cleaning and cooking, yes, somewhat. But my time with you?” She shook her head. “Unrelated to work or Elsa.”
“Really-”
“I am making up for lost time.” Deanna interjected firmly. “Time I don’t want to lose with you again.”

A loaded silence fell between the two – emotion high – before Selena slowly nodded her head. “I... I appreciate that.” she allowed herself to say. “More than I can say sometimes.”

Putting her dish away, Deanna noticed her wife eyeing the wedding ring she wore, causing Deanna to eye her own for a second before reaching out to take the ring-wearing hand of her partner, squeezing it tight. “We’ll get you there.” she whispered in a promise, smiling as Selena gazed up at her, the Snow Queen leaning in for a gentle kiss that the redhead returned affectionately – only for the sound of steps and crutches to be heard as Elsianna came from the hall towards the front door with her ‘swinging gait’, her backback strapped over her arms.

“I’m walking today.” she stated.
“No you’re not.” Selena stated softly but firmly, Deanna quick to catch her.
“It’s a long walk.” the redhead tried.
“I like walking.” Elsa explained.

“With a broken leg?” David joked, oblivious to the scene as he strolled towards the doors that linked to the elevator, Amiliah with him. “Scuse us, turtle.” he teased Elsianna, pushing the button for the down elevator and strolling in with Amiliah. “See you in the lobby!” he called out to his mothers as the doors closed.

A heavy silence filled the space, which Selena broke. “You’ve got first period with Ms. Vandeven. She’ll roast you if you’re late again.”
“Then I’ll walk faster.” Elsa countered firmly and sharply, eyes narrowing at her mother.
“Snowflake...”
“DON’T CALL ME THAT!”

The yell made even the windows shake a little, further relaying the shock that ripped through the space. Without a word, Elsianna turned and swung-walked her way to the elevator, pushing the button and entering it without gazing back at her mothers. Even when the doors closed in front of the child, neither Selena or Deanna moved right away.

Well, that went well! laughed the voice. How bout next- Deanna didn’t let it finish, banishing the voice as far into the depths of her mind as she could. Selena, meanwhile, had marched over to the fridge, pulling the door open to get another energy drink.

“You know you’re only supposed to have one-” Deanna didn’t mean to say it – it had come out automatically - but the second she did, she regretted it, as Selena suddenly stopped her fingers from opening the can, and instead threw it hard into the nearby sink, the hiss of the escaping drink fizzling out and into the confines. It did startle Deanna, she had to admit, but didn’t upset her nearly as much as seeing the platinum-blonde like this. Selena’s eyes were slammed shut and her arms were wrapped around herself tightly, hands clutching at the biceps.

“What more can I do?” came the inevitable whisper from the Snow Queen. “Everything is falling apart.”

“It’s not falling apart.” Deanna sighed, moving over towards the sink and throwing a gaze at it. Carefully, she picked up the still spilling can and stood it upright to stop it from further leaking into the sink.

“I’ve called her that since before she was born.” Selena threw back, turning her gaze towards her partner.
“I know.” the younger Frost nodded. “She didn’t mean it, Selena. She’s still hurting.”
“I know!” the platinum-blonde groaned in frustration. “But what more can I do? I let her and Asuna see each other again. I’ve tried to get her help. I’ve tried to give her space. I let her say things like... that.” she gestured towards the doors Elsianna had disappeared behind.

“But look at the progress.” Deanna implored. “She promised not to smoke anymore, so far, she’s keeping that promise. She’s not sneaking out-” But how much sneaking can you do on a broken leg? – “And when I talk to her, she seems more herself. It’s just...”

“Me.” Selena nodded, already knowing the answer. “It’s all me.” she scoffed. “I knew trying to put the family back together was a mistake. I was better off just going back to Nome while you all lived here-”

“Don’t be ridiculous!” Deanna pressed, stepping up closer to Selena. “You’re not going to get better if you hide away up there, okay? And I sure as hell don’t want you up there with Ryan still there.”
“He’s in jail.”
“For now.” Deanna scoffed. “But I’m not trusting a Scythe very far – except Gavin.”

Selena nodded in agreement, though she gave no sign of relief or comfort from Deanna’s imploring. “It’s more than that, Deanna.” Selena sighed. “I just... this and... and work...”

“What’s wrong with work?” Deanna asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Oh come on!” Selena laughed. “Don’t tell me you didn’t notice! Neither of us were booked for the damn pay-per-view!”
Deanna shrugged. “They wanted my match on the next show.”
“Some stupid ‘Supreme Saturday’ ripoff involving the biggest joke in SCW history? Stellar!” Selena laughed. “That’ll boost credibility for our family!”

“You’re taking it too personally.” Deanna tried. “Look, you want the Glimmer sisters? They’re busy and you still don’t have a partner. You want the world champion – busy. There was nothing for you, Selena. It happens!”

“Not when you’re...” the Snow Queen stopped herself, trying not to say the next word.

“When you’re what?” Deanna pressed. “When you’re ‘you’?” she had to shake her head sadly at that. “You and I both know how quickly star-power, credibility, place on the card can be taken away.” Slowly, she walked past the former world champion, moving to continue her task of cleaning the dishes. “You’re more worried about how many segments and matches you have than I am, Selena. I just want to compete. Long as I can, that’s what matters to me. They want someone else to do the talking and promoting, that’s fine with me.”

Selena was silent for a moment and, for what it was worth, Deanna felt proud. She didn’t care about being on one card or another or if she spent a few Breakdowns not in front of a camera outside of her wrestling matches. She’d rather have that and have the focus be on her abilities and skills rather than the drama, especially with how things were right now.

The ding of the elevator doors opening caught their attention, both women looking – and quietly hoping – to see Elsianna return...

“Mommy, we forgot the lucky bracelet!” Amiliah burst into the space like a pink-clad hurricane. “The one with the hearts!”

Deanna blinked for a second, but eventually smiled. “The one you made from the bead kit?”
“Uh-huh! It’s for you!” she called back, rushing further into the suite, back to her room.
“For me?”

There was no reply until the boundless energy that was Amiliah Calypso Frost returned to the two mothers, a tangle of red and black thread with uneven beads of white and red in her hands. Quickly, she thrust the item into Deanna’s hands. “So you can win your tournament. You have to wear it or you’ll lose! It’s lucky!”

Taking the little charm in her hand, Deanna eyes the item. The beads spelled out something almost like her name — D-E-A-A-N-A, the extra “A” almost making her laugh out loud.

“Wow,” Deanna whispered, smiling despite herself. “I love it.” she added, tying it around her wrist. “See? It fits perfect. How’s it look?”

“Perfect.” Behind them came the answer, Selena leaning against the doorway, watching — an unreadable expression flickering between pride, nostalgia and a bit of jealousy. “Bus is leaving!” she called out suddenly, heading towards the door. “I’ll take them.” she threw back to Deanna gently.

“Thank you.” the redhead called out.
“Bye mom!” Amiliah called out again, the last of the Frost children following Selena to the elevator doors and exiting the suite.

For a moment, Deanna just stood there, her eyes eventually gazing down to the bracelet wrapped around her wrist. In that moment... she just couldn’t stop looking at the gift her daughter gave her.

“Lucky, huh?” she asked, turning the hand this way and that. “Might be needing that sooner rather than later...”

It actually hurt how much she truly believed that remark in that moment...
