Villain of the Year

Everything had been in a haze on and off. She had only been half-there mentally the past near two weeks – at work, she meant. Yes, she had been there, yes. She had spoken and, yes, she had certainly been present enough to get whatever task she needed done… well, done. Matches won, words spoken, promises made. But it was as if her mind was in half of a fog the entire time.
What did she even remember from the last two weeks – the last two Breakdowns at her job? At being ‘The World-Ruler’? Wasn’t she supposed to be making ‘statements’? Ensuring that everyone KNEW, deep down, that it was HER time this year with the royale? That Taking Hold of the Flame belonged to her and her alone this year? Yes, that had been the plan, but what did she recall from those past two weeks? Evidence of success in those missions?
She had breezed by both interviews she had had backstage, either simply answering the questions as they were approached to her with passive answers that lacked little to any imaginative thought on her behalf…
She had dismissed Ryan Cavalier – the obnoxious newbie in SCW – staking their claim by confronting Selena like Glory and Syren did (because it had worked SO well for those two, right?)
She had fought the current Underground Champion, Colleen, and beaten her cleanly, thus proving (at least theoretically) that every champion was champion because of her good grace.
No, even with these assessments, none of those examples really stuck out in her mind as being ‘present’. The only time she had been fully there and aware – at work, being the ‘Face of SCW’ and ‘Blue-Eyed Devil’, and ‘World Ruler’ and blah blah blah – was when Xander had come storming out after her match with Colleen. Trying to steal her thunder-
She almost laughed aloud at that particular memory. Because of course the man couldn’t simply have waited till later to announce his Trios cash-in or done it earlier in the show or just let the website express the matter like it had done so. Nope, he had chosen when all eyes were on the biggest star – on Selena – to make his statement. There was nothing ‘random’ about that. He had picked that moment perfectly because of the attention “Selena Frost: World-Ruler” created – attention he wanted back on himself.
I should have stayed in the ring and kicked his damned head off. she thought with a smirk, the idea clearly amusing to the Snow Queen. Yes, she had been fully present for that moment and clearly remembered the anger she held towards the bastard – as well as the smidgen of respect she had for his cunning. Even so, she had spent the following week back in that half-haze, even Xander’s actions not enough to keep her ‘focused’ for too long.
How could she keep focused on work, on her plans, on ANYTHING… when her lips still burned?
Angrily, the platinum-blonde huffed, walking through the streets of New York, trying to just… to just clear her damn head!
Everything had been set! She was set! The plan was set! She had played each card in her hand when it needed to be played! She was on the cusp of achieving everything she had spent the past near year working towards! Even Knots and Sharper were acknowledging this! Even better! When there had been interference? Mason? CHBK? Kristen? CHBK? Glory? CHBK? Syren? CHB-fucking-K?! She had overturned it time and time again and worked it in her favor!
Mason – bloodied and taken out of SCW by her hand.
Kristen – embarrassed by her yet again.
Glory – beaten to the point of quitting the royale… though part of her still wasn’t entirely sold on that knowing the woman’s integrity as the Snow Queen did…
Syren – broken to the point where she couldn’t even beat newbies like Dante Slayton (which she STILL needed to focus on and deal with this week – dammit!)
And then, cherry on top, her call-out for the royale had made her the target of every single other entrant, every other entrant eyeing her and wanting to talk about her and the threat she was as the number 40 spot in the royale. It was all perfect! She was untouchable! Undeniable!
And because of one fucking kiss… she hated herself as her hand, for the umpteenth time, drifted up to her pale lips, fingertips brushing against the softer skin as it burned. She could still remember it. Every detail. Every second – every MILLISECOND – of that moment. How familiar it felt. How GOOD it felt!
It had consumed her mind entirely every second she dropped her guard. At work, around the kids, especially when she spotted Deanna and she had certainly done her best to only spot the redhead these last two weeks and nothing more beyond that. She had kept her word and called the younger woman, keeping her updated as needed, but the Snow Queen had steered clear of any kind of ‘alone time’ with her ex. The second the kids were dropped off, she left. If she was watching the kids at the ‘Forever Home’, she would ensure at least one of them was in the room with her when Deanna got there until Selena, herself, left. Even their conversations on the phone had been short and brief – sticking to things like the kids, work, and scheduling. In short, Selena had done all she could to ensure her ex-wife was never that close to her again.
Because she knew, deep down, that all it would take was one more moment. One second – one millisecond! A brush of the hand against her arm? Deanna’s hand taking hers? Even a damn look in a private setting – and Selena would just give in. She’d rush back into those arms, kiss those lips again and again and again and… and… and…
“And everything would be ruined.” She hissed to herself as a cold reminder, stepping past several people, including one leashed dog that scampered around her. She was only paying half-attention to where she was walking. It was the middle of the day and, even with her shades on to protect her eyes, she knew the route she was walking – had walked it so many times before. Stopping at the familiar silver, red, and black street vendor, she threw a quick smile the young man’s way.
“Afternoon, Julio.” She greeted distantly, holding up the right number of bills. “Can you get me ‘the works minus relish’?”
The dark-skinned man greeted her with a grin and words of familiarity before quickly getting together Selena’s order, handing her the New York hotdog that she took. Before her eyes, she could see the mustard, ketchup, chopped onions, and banana peppers that covered the sausage. She didn’t stick around to let Julio give her her change – she never did – she just threw him a thanks and was on her way, walking the short distance needed to get to the Central Park walkway – specifically the The Mall and Literary Walk. She could walk for miles through Central Park and had done so many times to clear her hand on such ‘off-days’. She didn’t stop walking until she was ready to, picking out one of the many benches on the side of the paved paths to sit.
Few people bothered her. Probably because of the fact that with the large shades on, no makeup, her hair covered by a gray beanie, who would suspect her as anything by just another New Yorker? She preferred it today. Fame was something she didn’t want any part of today – usually she didn’t mind it and dealt with it as it came, being as kind as she could to any ‘fans’ of hers (odd that there were still some out there) and to just fans of the SCW Universe outside of shows and pay-per-views. But sitting there on the bench allowed her to unwrap her hot dog, feeling the freshly-cooked snack in her hand. Biting into it, she supressed the moan of satisfaction as she savoured the flavors of the sauces and toppings she had asked for mixed with the cooked meat.
Gods, I needed this. She thought as she finished her bite, savouring it before taking another, her mind able to attempt to sort itself out as her stomach was being appeased.
Okay… so Deanna had kissed her. Couldn’t be undone. It happened. Distance was the key now. Selena knew that much. She could use work as a distraction – that was an idea. She had Dante Slayton next, that would be a decent match to focus on. The guy was probably riding high from his win over Syren. Yes, there were distractions but Syren had taken advantage of it as well as far as Selena could tell in reviewing the match. In fact, Syren had done it first – using the interference to try and steal the win from Dante. Far as she was concerned, Dante had played it back on the woman, making it all fair. So while not a ‘clean win’ like Selena’s had been at Rebirth, per say, it was till ‘fair-ish’ in Selena’s mind, meaning Dante possessed some skill to backup his delusions of being world champion and going after Fall of Man if he had taken down Syren with that “Devil Trigger”. Which meant that Selena could definitely get a good match between her and him in a few days. That was… at least something.
Still need to beat him… The Snow Queen thought, taking another bite of her hot dog. Beating Dante was more than just saying “I beat the guy that beat Syren after I beat her.” Or whatever could be taken from it. Odds were most people were expecting her to win, due to her experience and dominance the past near year. Still, this was about more than that.
She was the number one target at the royale – more undeniably so with that 40th spot now. She needed to continue to show dominance. She needed to continue on with her image of ‘untouchable’, ‘unbeatable’, where doubt of anyone stopping her were in everyone’s mind. Emphatically beating Dante would help with that. Not necessarily burying the poor boy, she didn’t need to toy with him as she had with Ryan Cavalier at Fatal Fortunes, but she definitely couldn’t show any ‘cracks in the armor’.
Slowly, as she processed these thoughts, she suddenly became aware of her heart slowing – slowing? When had it been racing? But it had. Not aggressively so, but definitely harder and further than it usually did, except when she was working out. Again, Selena focused on that and strove to control it further. To further calm it.
She recognized it after a moment, sighing in frustration before naming the cause – anxiety. Ever since that kiss, the panic attacks had returned. The same she had had back in the early days of her marriage, when dealing with New Eden and Monarchy and her claustrophobia. Slow, at first, and not enough to fully destabilize her, but enough for her to recognize them. A bit of breathing, a bit of repeating her old mantra and she could get it under control. But every time she thought back to that kiss – which was all the time now – it threatened to escalate into a panic attack. In short, the thought of that kiss always threatened to destabilize her, and she had to keep on her guard to stop it from happening.
It was infuriating and exhausting, which was why distance was so important right now between her and Deanna. Yes, Selena had been candid about her love still being there for the redhead, but the line Deanna had crossed? Selena hadn’t. That wasn’t part of the plan. It had been the redhead that had made the plunge and thrown things out of whack.
“Not looking forward to that conversation…” Selena whispered to herself, seeing one of the banana peppers with a black spot on it. Plucking it off her hot dog, she tossed it a few inches to her side, away from anyone walking by her. Almost immediately, a pigeon was there, scooping it up in its beak and flying up and away with it. “Hope you like heartburn.” She whisper-called to the bird as it disappeared into a tree, the Snow Queen shaking her head as she continued to eat her food.
Talking to Deanna was inevitable. She was supposed to be there this evening for dinner with the family, something they all – the mothers and children of the Frost family – had agreed to maintain at least once every two weeks. Dinner with everyone sitting at the table in the Manhattan house. Probably why she was having a hot dog and not a full-blown lunch today – that and she didn’t have much of an appetite right now. Still, she knew she would have to talk to Deanna tonight and the redhead would pressure her for answers on why things were distant – as if she didn’t know…
Again, Selena felt some tension in her chest but quickly breathed it away. It would be fine. She would simply put her foot down and stress that Deanna had crossed a line and that it couldn’t be tolerated going forward.
“I just…” the Snow Queen breathed. “Just have to get to the end of July.” She did another long breath. “After that… it won’t matter.” She added, giving herself a bit more resolve. After July, she would be world champion again, regardless of whoever held the title, everything would be settled and she’d have completed her year-long plan – year and a half if she were honest with herself.
Feeling the calm take center once more, she was able to complete her food, though there was still some bread from the bun left in her hand. Tearing it into small pieces, she tossed them down beside where she sat, onto the cobblestones, watching as the pigeons all flew in when it was safe to do so, the brazen birds not wanting to refuse the free food!
Selena watched them scuttle and fight for the scraps she had thrown -
symbolic, isn’t it? her devil voice whispered knowingly, the persona she had created to be this ‘villain in SCW’ like a mask or character, if that made any sense. But it kind of was…
From her ‘rematch clause’ to calling her shot at THOTF to so many other moments in SCW, it seemed that the whole “my world, you all just live in it” had taken on a life of its own, and for that, Selena was, honestly, thrilled. It made for compelling television and moments in SCW. In that, she could truly be proud of that. People were stepping up to her. Veterans, newbies, everyone was trying to ‘make it untrue’ that SCW was her world as the World-Ruler. Ryan, Dante, Polly - those were just two examples from the past few weeks! It changed nothing, sadly. She still needed to get past them and get to Rise to Greatness and the world title – everything hinged on that, but still… was it wrong to be happy that so much talent would step up? She had to imagine they all would again for Rise to Greatness, wherever they all ended up and onward! She had to imagine it would work out that way.
The pigeons all flew away en masse, their sudden source of food depleted, leaving Selena alone again on the bench. She still wasn’t sure how best to deal with Deanna and put her foot down without hurting her. She knew what had to be done – she had just established that – it was how to do it that was bothering her now.
Deanna was still… fragile. The redhead was so close to making a return to SCW! The last thing Selena wanted was to push her back a few steps! She had kept an eye on the United States title picture for Deanna (quietly, of course) and with Asher back and Majors running around and Luz – gods, that division needed Deanna back! If only for the competition! But just as much as Selena didn’t want to halt or reverse Deanna’s progress, she couldn’t rush it either. Deanna needed to be ready, physically, yes, but moreso mentally. The onslaught she would receive for being gone for nearly a year…
Could she still hack it?
Was she still the dominant United States Champion she had been for over a year?
Could she handle the level of talent that had taken over the division while she was gone?
Could she handle the doubters and hecklers?
What if they didn’t remember her? What if the SCW Universe simply saw her as part of “Selena Frost” despite their separation?
These were all things Deanna would have to deal with on her own. She would have to be ready. Still, Selena needed to be delicate in setting matters straight tonight.
Should she be forward? Tell Deanna straight and clear that they could not cross that line again?
Should she explain everything fully? Explain why that wasn’t the case?
Should she remind Deanna of the progress the redhead had made and how that should be the focus?
Selena shook her head. She wasn’t sure. Any more than she was sure about her daughter having a girlfriend – gods, what kind of crazy-ass month had it been? Her daughter was dating their neighbour and Deanna had kissed her. June could not get here soon enough!
Still, despite the unease with her ex, Selena had to admit, Elsianna having a ‘crush girlfriend’ had been good for her daughter, which she was sure she would see more of at dinner tonight.
“Alright.” The Snow Queen settled, tossing her wrapper in the nearby trash before pushing herself to her feet. “Let her down easy. Set matter straight. Get her to refocus on her progress back to SCW. Sounds like a plan.” She said to herself before she was walking again. She didn’t go the way back home yet. She merely just kept walking.
It was such a beautiful day… and goddamn that kiss still wouldn’t stop replaying in her mind!
