Villain of the Year
”Rough Return”

“MOMMY!” cried the six-year-old as she rushed down the porch, having spotted the big bus driving up the driveway and rushing out like a bat out of hell before the vehicle had even parked! Further undeterred, the little redhead launched herself towards the equally-beaming woman knelt a few yards from her – the one that had given the child her red hair and green eyes!
“Ami!” Deanna cried out, her voice cracking as the woman wrapped her thin arms around the child without any hesitation, using her legs to lift herself and, thus, the child up into the air. “I missed you so much!” the redhead cried out as the emotions – so many weeks of loneliness and repression – sprang forth, Deanna finally able to let it all go with happy sobs and hugs to her youngest daughter.
Selena stood back and watched it all, a sad/happy smile gracing her features as she leaned against the side of her “Believe it or Not!” limo-bus.
She did not regret this, watching her ex-wife holding their youngest daughter. It had been a decision she had made ever since Mexico and Amelia and Luz’s wedding. She had had to rush back with Amelia and Luz for the same reason, that being Under Attack. Of course, Deanna had been denied the chance to accompany them, not only because of her current health (which she argued with the Snow Queen on), but even if there was the remote possibility that Enigma would show up…
Still, Selena’s decision had eased Deanna’s mind. She would travel back to Kentucky, same way she had gotten from there to Mexico in the first place, and, once Selena was able, she would return to collect Deanna and take her to Manhattan for a few days during the post-PPV break and allow her to see their children.
Of course, that had taken a bit more time than the former world champion cared to admit or show – and part of the reason she was leaning against the bus as she was, the large vehicle offering sturdy support for the Snow Queen’s back.
She had wanted to immediately leave Detroit soon as her match was finished – in fact, that had been the initial plan immediately following the chamber match.
The chamber match…
Gods, it had been so satisfying to emerge from that match as the winner – and to have pinned James Evans in the process! The Hall of Famer had mouthed off incessantly about Selena – nothing the platinum-blonde hadn’t heard before – but for a man that came and went like the changing of the tide in and out SCW?
Gods, she hated people like that! Evans, Hudson, Allocco, Kandis, the list was a mile long of names that came and went from that place – people that talked down to her as if they knew better. As if they had a right to judge her – the person that had spent year after year in SCW being the top star! The person that had come back to SCW and hadn’t stepped away since! And here they were, blabbering on and on about ‘Saving SCW’ and ‘Elevating people’ and look what happened?
Selena sighed quietly, further pressing her back against the steel of the vehicle’s side. She had walked out of the chamber in utter smugness and satisfaction, her victory beyond refute! And, her own fault, she had chosen not to get checked by the doctor, instead discreetly scarfing down an NX pill, before heading out to watch the world championship match, which only ADDED to her satisfaction as she had watched the ‘provider/promiser of the Wild, Wild West’ be dethroned as the world champion by Xander Valentine. Almost just as fast were the rumors that Hudson was retiring! Crawling back into whatever hole he had come out of now that his ‘string of good luck’ was gone!
Just like the others… Selena shook her head knowingly, but she would deal with that later. In truth, it had been too much good news for the Snow Queen: Light in the Darkness’ wedding and them retaining their tag-titles, her win in the chamber, and Hudson’s loss and potential retirement and leaving SCW?
She had been so wrapped up in it all that she had ignored the adrenaline slowly leaving her body until the next morning… when she had been unable to leave her bed. Even with the NX dulling the pain, her back would not stop its complaints! She had been bedridden for most of the day after and – she knew – she should have stayed that way for a few more days, or at the very least gone straight home and recovered there…
But she hadn’t…
She had taken a four-hour detour (on top of the ten hours needed to travel back to New York City/Manhattan) to keep her promise. To collect Deanna from the redhead’s sister’s home and bring her back to Manhattan for a few days.
Stupid… her devil-voice reprimanded, but Selena ignored it. Yes, it was foolish, she could silently admit to that. With her being booked on the next Breakdown card AND with Fatal Fortunes on the horizon, any delay in her recovery was asking for trouble. But she refused to regret the decision or consider it stupid!
She had already taken so much away from Deanna – essentially locking her up in Kentucky due to the redhead’s mental health – and if she had learned anything from Deanna’s “escape” and the two had being able to talk in Mexico (after Selena had found her), it was that isolation was NOT the key. Deanna needed to be away from SCW, yes, and Selena refused to budge in the safety of their children, but to completely take Deanna away from them and them from the redhead.
That had been wrong. It had been a mistake on Selena’s part, and one she regretted.
So, even though her back continued to be problematic for the platinum-blonde, seizing and spasming as if it was throwing a temper-tantrum, Selena refused to show it, opting to keep her focus on the woman standing before her, the child in her arms, and the two children – Elsianna and David – as they, too, came outside to greet their mothers.
“Hey, mom.” David smiled, opting to give the woman a one-arm hug. “Glad you’re okay.”
“Me too.” Deanna smiled at the boy.
“Some of the people said you were looney.”
“David Michael Frost!”
Selena hadn’t meant to call out the boy’s full name, but the eight-year-old’s lack of tact was certainly not something Selena wanted to ruin Deanna’s time. “Apologize to your mom this minute!”
“I didn’t say it!” David shot back defensively. “People at school were saying it!”
“And you know better than to be spreading such things! Especially when you know they are untrue! What does Thumper say?”
The question caught everyone off-guard, including the speaker – it had been some time since Selena had used that example with her children, demanding the quote from the movie ‘Bambi’.
Grumbling a little, David muttered the words he was being ordered to speak. “If you can’t say something nice… don’t say nothing at all.”
“Exactly.” Selena nodded, crossing her arms over her chest. “Now apologize to your mom.”
“But I-“
“David.” Selena warned, her tone colder than the wind that was blowing through the Black Arrow neighbourhood. It was a tone David recognized very well – all the Frost children and Deanna did.
The ”Push me one step further and you’re grounded” look.
Gulping a little, David’s head jerked back towards the mother closest to him, gazing up the few inches need to stare Deanna in the eyes. “I’m sorry, mom!” he tried apologetically. “I didn’t mean to it.”
“That’s okay.” Deanna nodded her head. “But if anyone asks you at school, I’m…”
For a moment, the redhead turned on the spot, emerald eyes shifting over to gaze at the sapphire eyes of Selena, somewhat pleading for some kind of help. For her part, Selena could not think of anything, only managing a shrug of her shoulders… causing her to wince as the muscles in her back decided to ‘voice’ their disgruntled nature.
With no help coming from the taller woman, Deanna turned back to her son, Amiliah still in her arms, and spoke slowly. “I’m dealing with some health issues that make it necessary for me to be away for awhile. A kind of…” she looked around, but not really at anything in the property around her. “Secret mission?” she settled on saying.
It was all Selena could do to not release the snort of laughter that threatened to escape her at her wife’s choice of words, if only to not receive a cold, emerald glare from the United States Champion. Biting down on her lower lip to distract herself, she managed to supress any sounds from escaping as David gazed at Deanna with confusion and curiosity.
“A secret mission?” he asked, tilting his head this way and that. “Like a spy?”
“Nnnnoooo….” Deanna drawled out. “Not a spy. I’m still only a wrestler, but…”
It was almost amusing for Selena, watching Deanna shift before her eyes uncomfortably, trying to explain the truth to their children without actually telling them the truth.
I could step in… Selena smiled knowingly. She had the first time, but this time was different.
She wanted this… the young woman reminded herself.
She wanted to see them for longer than a few minutes. She wanted to be a parent again…
Still, there was something almost inspiring, or at least respectful, in watching the redhead trying so hard to be just that. To the Snow Queen, she could admire the effort Deanna was putting into this – which wasn’t all that surprising considering the near ten-years she had been a parent to Elsianna, and then giving birth to both David and Amiliah. Perhaps it was Selena’s own issues – her nightmares and the resulting therapy and recollecting on Anastasia DeCarlo – that was making her see Deanna in a slightly different ‘light’, the former world champion grateful to have had such a woman that loved their children so much – a far cry to the nightmare her stepmother had been and the absentee Alejandra had been forced to be.
“But…” Deanna kept trying, regaining Selena’s attention. “But… okay…” she huffed, shrugging her shoulders. “I’m fighting a supervillain.”
The wind, itself, seemed to go silent at the sound of those words as the entire Frost-family members (including exes) stood still, all eyes on Deanna. Absolutely silence filled them – even the birds weren’t making a sound. Selena couldn’t even hear any insects, neighbours, nothing! But then again, she was too busy re-registering Deanna’s declarative statement!
“A…supervillain?” Elsianna asked, standing the furthest behind of the Frost children.
“Like Thanos!?” David asked with far more interest and excitement where Elsianna had showed confusion and some skepticism.
I think I’m going to have to go with my first child there. Selena thought.
“Well…” Deanna tried, shifting a little on her feet uncomfortably.
“Is he your archie-rival, mommy? Amiliah asked, gazing up at the redhead while still being held.
“He…” Deanna bit her lower lip and it was then that Selena could gaze at the rigidness of her ex-wife’s posture. How taunt her spine was – like Selena’s, but where the platinum-blonde’s was a result of the damage she had taken inside the chamber, partially her opponents and partially because she had thought it had been a good idea to do a DDT on top of a pod, followed by a damn elbow drop from the top of said pod down into the ring! – Deanna’s tension was more emotional… and growing! She could see the redhead looking around, scanning the property of their ‘Forever Home’, eyeing the gates and the sidewalks beyond those.
It was the same tension Selena had seen from Deanna in Mexico – when the redhead had thought she had seen Enigma…
“OKAY!” Selena suddenly called out, pushing herself off the side of the bus, her back immediately feeling like a bunch of small firecrackers were going off up and down her spine. Still, she fought back, trying desperately not to show it. “That’s enough questions for your mother.” She tried, adding a slight twinge of chastisement to it. Quickly, she took Amiliah out of Deanna’s arms, lifting the small child down and onto the ground.
Her back was on fucking fire! She wanted to scream at it and immediately hated how far away the bus (where she was keeping her NX) suddenly felt! A few feet looked like miles and she wanted to pull her platinum-blonde hair out at it! Still, she bit down and powered through – as if this was more painful and challenging than the damn chamber!
Sure as hell feels like it in this moment!! her mind cried.
“I happen to know it is a school night and the three of you have homework!” she added, trying to sound more calm and peaceful than tense and in pain. “And if you three want to have time tonight to catch-up with us and… I don’t know… play Mario Party or something-”
“MARIO PARTY?!” David and Amiliah’s eyes grew wide!
“You’d better get your work done before dinner, I think-“
The two kids were off like a shot before Selena could even finish sentence, the pair arguing as they fled inside.
“I wanna be Shy-Guy!” Amiliah cried out.
“NO! I wanna be Shy-Guy! You’re ALWAYS Shy-Guy!” David countered.
“Am not!”
“Are too!”
“Am not!”
“Are too!”
The back and forth slowly faded to silence as the two youngest Frost children could be heard running up the stairs to their rooms to get to work. For Elsianna, the oldest child cast a glance at Selena before turning her head back towards Deanna, though her eyes flitted back to the older woman. Seeing the gaze, Selena met it, subtly gesturing with her head to give a tilt towards Deanna, though redhead did not see it. It took only a brief moment for Elsianna to move, gently hugging Deanna, who accept the hug gratefully.
“So happy you’re home, mother.” The eleven-year old remarked honestly, earning a squeeze from Deanna.
“Me too.” The redhead sighed in relief, grateful for the end of the previous conversation. “We’ll catch up later tonight. I promise.” She added with a whisper before releasing her daughter and letting Elsianna re-enter the house as well after her siblings.
Without a word, Selena watched as Deanna’s gaze seemed to linger on their children for a moment before the shorter woman turned herself a little back to cast a glance at Selena.
“I…” she whispered. “I felt so guilty just popping back here just to grab my passport. I barely had a chance to say a word to any of them. But I was afraid if I lingered here, I wouldn’t leave until you caught up with me.” She seemed to be speaking this more to herself than to Selena, prompting the Snow Queen to keep silent rather than respond (probably with another apology for her actions). “Thank you…” this statement was directed at the platinum-blonde as Deanna’s emerald-gaze had turned completely to focus on the former world champion.
Still, Selena could only shake her head. “Don’t thank me just yet.” Selena sighed. “I have to get you back to Kentucky in a few days.”
“I know…” Deanna sighed. She knew the rules as well as Selena did – it was the terms of the agreement they had made. For the joy Deanna (and Selena did as well) in the redhead reuniting with their children, there was still the issue of The Enigma/Deanna’s mental health. As such, only a ‘break’ could be offered to the younger woman. She would need to return to Kentucky, which Selena would facilitate, and continue her treatment until Marsh-Asher gave her the clean bill of health.
Selena still didn’t like the idea of SCW’s doctor – Alex’s choice (the man was obsessed with his old superstars and ‘legends’) – making the call. She wanted someone like Glasgen, but in this, she was willing to relent and play by the rules. It was better than her wife running off and disappearing to Mexico.
She might actually go back to Frankfurt next time… she thought with a bit of nervousness, which she shoved down best she could.
“Come on.” Selena gentle reached out to place a hand on Deanna’s shoulder, guiding the young lady towards the house. “Best we get you unpacked and I know Gerda and Oberon will want to say hello.” She added. “We’ve only got a few days. Best we make the most of them.”
Determined, Deanna gave a resolute nod of her head before walking the few steps needed to return to the suitcase she had placed on the ground before Amiliah had made her appearance. Picking it up, she threw a hand into her long, red locks of hair. “I’m going to spoil them rotten!” she stated in determination, giving a wicked grin to Selena.
“Oh sure! Make me the bad mom!” Selena called back as Deanna rushed into the house after the children, immediately, the sound of a dog barking in excitement could be heard.
For Selena, she wanted to run after Deanna. To play along this rather sweet moment. But she couldn’t. She couldn’t run in that moment. Her back wouldn’t let her. She wasn’t high on adrenaline and satisfaction from Under Attack like a few days ago and her NX…
She cast a glance back at her bus, only realizing now that it was starting to move – Ra already driving it down and back towards a larger parking space in New York City… Selena’s only source of NX going with her…
The Snow Queen sighed in somber realization. It was going to be a long few days…
“I can do this…” she whispered to herself, doing her best to straighten her back despite the muscles’ protest. “I’ve survived worse…”
Though as she took the first few slow steps towards the house, she wasn’t so sure she’d be able to say those as easily in the days to come…
