“Easy guys!” Selena called out as she watched the two men in jeans, shirts and coats pull and riff on the burnt, dead plant. “I told you I think the roots went deeper!”
Ignoring her, the hired help continued to pull with all their might, their gloved hands gripping the trunk of what remained of the burnt bush outside of her sister-in-law’s – well, ex-sister-in-law, Selena supposed – house. It wasn’t like their efforts were useless, the shrub was slowly moving up out of the ground, but if they had just gone another inch or two around and down like Selena had suggested, they would not have had to fight so much with the still strong roots gripping the earth. Still, when the men refused to heed her advice (being more ‘experienced’ in their field of ‘yard work maintenance’), the Snow Queen merely crossed her arms over her chest and continued to watch them struggle, taking a seat on the porch several feet away.
The handymen were certainly not the most patient or kind people Selena had met, but seeing as how they were the few available in town on such short notice, Selena had settled on getting the tasks done as opposed to ‘manners’. The two men, Donald and Richard she had learned, were big men and if their truck was any clue (painted with some kind of stickman with a wrench in its hands followed by their company name), this was their ‘family business’. Still, a few inches around and down…
The sound of the door opening surprised her, causing the platinum-blonde to jump up to her feet, almost stumbling off the porch step as she did. Still, she managed to keep her balance as she saw Amelia Springs, Amelia’s wife Isabella, and – Selena tried to keep a straight face as she saw Deanna emerge behind them – Deanna and Izzy were dressed in casual pants (jeans or sweatpants) and shirts, while Amelia was dressed in her cop uniform (probably about to head to work).
“What is all the noise-“ Amelia started but stopped when she saw the familiar woman standing on her porch. “You… again.” She rolled her eyes before seeing the two men pulling on the plant. Immediately, her eyes shot back up to Selena, marching the few steps necessary to greatly shorten the distance between them. “What the hell are they doing?”
“Just helping.” Selena shrugged her shoulders and offering as kind of a smile as she could. “I was worried about you guys dealing with the broken window and the winter and then the eyesore of a burnt shrub in your yard, so I hired some handymen to clean it up and fix up your window. I’m sorry that it’s so early but this was the only time they had available today…” her voice dropped to a whisper. “At least that’s what they told me. I think they were just trying to play that old game where-“
She was interrupted as she heard the sound behind her, turning her head to see the men rip the remains of the bush out of the ground. “Ha!” called out one – Richard, Selena was almost sure – “There ya go!” he huffed, still holding onto it while his co-worker dusted his hands off, similar to how Selena had done after she had taken down James Evans and won the chamber match.
An action she now, somewhat, regretted…
There was no beating around the bush – she eyed the black plant that Richard still held at the thought – she hadn’t just beaten James Evans that night. She had humiliated him and, thus, The Fall of Man. She had never felt more dominant and secure in her place in SCW since losing the world championship than that moment. Yes, RTG and the Trios Finals had rattled things a little for her, but the chamber? You’d have to be an idiot to not see that she belonged at the top of SCW, the only person even close would be whoever was holding the SCW world title at the time – in this case, Xander Valentine.
Even so, had she gone too far? She didn’t care about Evans’ ego. Far as she was concerned, the man deserved the embarrassment and more after the crap he had spat in her direction, making it all about him vs. her – as if she had time for that! – and trying to ‘take her place in SCW’, the same BS she had heard from Hudson, Reed, and countless others. It had felt good to put the man in his place by handing him such an emphatic, undisputed loss. Even so, the consequences…
That was what she felt bad about. Amelia and Luz – Light in the Darkness. She had not anticipated Fall of Man to go after the World Tag-Team Champions. Whine and complain about their loss? Sure. Make some excuse to try and spare their ‘egos’? Absolutely. That’s what men like that always did. But brazenly attack and dismantle Selena’s friends?
No, she hadn’t predicted that, but maybe that was the issue. Evans couldn’t beat her. She’d proven that, so he had gone after ‘Selena’s friends’. Why not? Blake Mason was going through the same strategy-
At the thought, Selena’s hands tightened into fists, her mind distracted to the point that she almost missed Amelia Springs still talking to her.
“What?” she asked quickly. “I’m sorry, I was…” she cleared her throat rather loudly. “What did you say?”
“I said, ‘Tell them to put the bush back now!’”. The cop ordered. “And be lucky I don’t charge you for trespassing!”
“Amelia!” Isabella chastised. “Don’t even kid about that!”
“What’s the problem?” Selena asked, genuinely confused. “I’m just trying to help. I know Lydia isn’t my niece anymore, but I still want to look after her too and I was worried with the winter-“
Instead of explaining, Amelia simply huffed, shouldering past Selena to get to her own car. She was in it and pulling out of the driveway before Selena heard Isabella calling her wife’s name. “Amelia!”
“I…” Selena looked back at the younger, kinder-looking Springs woman. “I’m sorry.” She was genuinely shocked. “I didn’t… I didn’t mean to upset her, really!”
“It’s…” Isabella sighed, shaking her head and waving her hand. “It’s okay.” She spoke slowly. “It’s not your fault, Selena. You couldn’t possibly know.”
“Know what?” Selena asked, her eyes turning over to Deanna, who could only give an apologetic shrug.
“Amy…” Izzy spoke slowly. “Amy planted that shrub the day after we came back from our honeymoon. It was… sorta… our special ‘plant’ to her. It was the first gift of our marriage sort of thing…”
Selena’s eyes went wide, the only word she was capable of muttering in that moment was “Shit…”
“It’s okay.” The shorter Springs-woman assured, even reaching out a hand to place it on Selena’s shoulder. “She’ll understand. You were doing something nice and…” she eyed the wooden panels covering her broken window. “I appreciate it – I know Lydia will.”
“Still…” Selena sighed. “I should have run it by you two first. Gods, I always do this!” she groaned out.
Again, her trying to do the ‘right thing’ had exploded in her face! Why couldn’t she just have started with them fixing the damn window? There had been no damage to the house via the small fire (the cause pf which now clear to Selena), according to the handymen. But she didn’t want to disturb the Springs (and Deanna) so early in the morning with tearing and re-opening the hole in their wall caused by the broken window. So, she had opted for the burnt/dead plant in the yard. Didn’t that make sense?
Except you should have asked them instead of just assuming you knew better…
This wasn’t SCW! She couldn’t just act like the hotshot and knowing better than so many others. She couldn’t just let people run their mouths and then make them eat their words inside the ring! No, assumptions had consequences here just like they did in SCW – Selena just didn’t face many in SCW with her being one of the top superstars to the point where she wasn’t even worried about the upcoming Fatal Fortunes.
Why would she be? She had only really lost two matches this whole year and only once had she been pinned. She had beaten practically everyone on the available roster, the one person that beat her? Gone (Shocker!). Ultimately, it had gotten to a point where people were begging to whatever god they believed that they WOULDN’T draw her for a match. And it’s not like she had anything to lose one way or another. She had no title to put on the line and she, literally, had her ‘written in stone’ contract to cash-in any time she wished. Would she dismiss an opportunity if, for the first time in ten years, fortune smiled on her? No, not necessarily, but she didn’t need it. And with nothing to lose and everything to gain if that was the case, Selena didn’t have to worry. The odds were just too much in her favor of victory and too much in her favor of walking out of the two-week event unfazed. But that was SCW – where she could afford to make such assumptions.
“Hey!” she heard one of the handymen, Richard, call out to her in a gruff voice. “Window next?”
“Uh… yeah.” Selena nodded, getting the nod from Izzy. “We’ll just… uh… get out of the way.”
Getting the hint, Isabella moved back inside the house, allowing Deanna, who had remained silent the entire time, to step inside with Selena close to her.
“How’s your back?” Selena heard the redhead whisper before feeling the hand on her arm.
“It’s okay.” Selena whispered. “Really, Deanna, I didn’t mean to upset anyone.”
“I didn’t know either.” Deanna answered honestly. “Not like my own sister tells me anything.” She added in a whisper, and an obvious hint of sadness. “She was sad when she learned the bush was burned, but I thought that was just because of the fire itself.” Deanna sighed.
“Actually…” Selena paused, reaching up to take the hand on her arm. “That’s the other reason I came here again.”
The redhead only tilted her head in curiosity and growing concern. For a second, Selena shot a glace towards Isabella, who was simply watching them from where she stood a few steps away. “Can we sit down for a minute?” Selena asked, her eyes shifting from the brunette to the redhead.
It was Deanna who gave a nod first, the former Frost taking control of the ‘hand-holding’ by affirming her own grip on Selena’s hand and pulling her into the small family room and towards the dark-blue couch. She sat first and waited for Selena to join her, Izzy taking a seat in one of the chairs nearby.
“Is it Enigma?” Deanna asked, emerald eyes searching Selena’s sapphire ones. “Has something happened?”
“No… but yes…” Selena breathed as she reached into the pocket of her black-leather long-coat. It took only a second for her fingers to feel the sharp edge of the envelope, which she used to take hold of with her fingers and pull out of her pocket. Taking the envelope, she handed it over to Deanna. “I think it be better if you read this.”
“What is it?” Deanna asked, taking the paper without question and opening it. “Probably my termination papers.” She said under her breath. “Best of luck in your future endeavours, ‘crazy girl’.” She added before she managed to open the paper and scan it, her eyes picking out the details.
For Selena, she merely watched her wife – Ex-wife she reminded herself – as Deanna’s eyes first scanned each line… then they widened, then her brow furrowed, then her eyes went wide again, until finally, she gazed up to look at Selena.
“What does this mean?” she asked, holding the paper towards Selena.
“It means…” Selena sighed. “That this is all my fault… again.” With a shake of her head, Selena pushed herself off of the couch, her feet letting her pace around the room.
“What is it?” Isabella asked, leaning forward in her chair, earning Deanna’s attention.
“I don’t… I don’t quite get it myself.” She returned her attention to the pacing Selena. “Selena… this says that someone from SCW HR found out where I was staying…”
“And that someone contacted Blake Mason and Blake Mason sent someone, probably Brittany Lohan to set fire to the house and break the window.” Selena explained. “Alex gave me that last night.” She gestured to the envelope.
“But… why?” Deanna asked.
“I’m sorry… who is Blake Mason and Brittany… what was it?”
“Lohan, Izzy.” Deanna answered. “They’re wrestlers in SCW.” She turned back to Selena. “But why would Mason go after me? I thought he just wanted the World title, not the United States title. Going after me makes no sense in that pursuit, unless…” Again, those beautiful emerald-eyes went wide as the answer came to her – the same answer Selena had learned last night.
“Unless it was to get to me.” Selena stated simply. “That’s why what happened is my fault.”
It was the oldest fucking trick in the book – and it ALWAYS fucking worked! Ever since Deanna had come into Selena’s life, she had been a target. And when they had become a couple, and then married, and a partner and mother to their children, that had only become more so. Selena had lost track of how many people had gone after Deanna as a surefire way to get Selena’s attention. Xander, Vixen, Regan, Cannon, it was the lowest-hanging branch in ‘ways to get to Selena’ so of course a cheat like Blake would take it!
“He wanted to throw me off my game for the chamber.” Selena reasoned. “And when that didn’t work, he found a better way.”
“A better way?” Izzy asked. “To do what?”
“To shoot up the rankings.” Deanna explained. “Why worry about winning a chamber and risking injury to do so when, if you beat the woman that WON the chamber, you’ve got a rocket to your back straight to a world title shot.”
It was true. With Selena the second highest ranked wrestler in SCW – with only the world champion ahead of her - even with Konrad making claims and even without her contract, all she would have to do was snap her fingers and she’d have a world title shot lined up on sheer rank alone. But that wasn’t the focus now. She could care less about Konrad, Xander or the world title – the latter of the three would come soon enough.
No, now… her eyes found Deanna. Now, Deanna is the concern…
“I’m sorry.” Selena finally said. “I didn’t think anyone would go that far anymore. Especially since the divorce.” She saw Deanna look away but ignored it, continuing to pace. “But I’ve shown too much concern over Deanna and this whole Enigma thing. Any idiot would see that I still love her.”
“Wait- what?” Deanna asked, eyes wide.
“Focus, Deanna.” Selena ordered.
“No no! You don’t just drop a line like that like it’s nothing.”
“It is nothing.” Selena stated. “Nothing new. I love you. Always have. Always will. Now is not the time to go further with that.”
“She’s right.” Isabella tried, reaching over to take Deanna’s hand. “You two can work THAT out later. What matters is what we do now.”
“Exactly.” Selena nodded. “Deanna’s safety has been compromised and I won’t endanger you or Amelia or Lydia here. If Blake is capable of bribing people in HR to rat you out, then clearly we need something that not even SCW knows about.”
“Or…” Deanna offered, pushing herself to her feet. “Or we show a united front.”
“What?” Selena asked, stopping her pacing.
“Think about it.” Deanna tried, reaching out to take Selena’s hands into hers. “I go back. I let the world know – Mason, Enigma, all of them – that I will not be bullied and not some tool to get to you.”
“Deanna…” Selena warned, already seeing the gears working in the younger woman’s head.
“You show the world what happens when they mess with our family. We bring back The House of Frost again!“
“Deanna!” Selena’s raised voice finally managed to break the rant Deanna was on, forcing the redhead to snap her head back towards the platinum-blonde.
“You’re still not medically cleared.” Selena stated simply. It was the only answer she could give without dismaying the poor woman. In truth, Mason’s actions had made it beyond clear that Selena couldn’t afford to show any unity beyond what she already had with Deanna. She could care – even love – the woman, but teaming up again? Out of the question. Putting her back on TV? In the arenas? Not when she was still mentally rattled by Enigma.
“I’m… I’m fine.” Deanna tried – a weak attempt at best.
“You know you’re not.” Selena stressed. “A little fire and you were hysterical. I’m not…” she held up her hands to calm the annoyed look on Deanna’s face. “I’m not saying you weren’t justified. But if that’s all it takes, Deanna. From someone that had PTSD, okay? I couldn’t…” she breathed, inhaling and exhaling. “I had to overcome it before I was ready for anything else. You need to overcome this before anything else can even be considered.”
“But…but…” Deanna tried. “I’m the United States Champion… I…” she eyed Isabella, and then Selena. “You know if I don’t come back to defend it… I’ll be stripped of it and…”
“That’s…” Selena tried but stopped herself, yet it was enough for Deanna’s eyes to widen in realization.
“They…” her jaw trembled. “They already did.”
“No!” Selena stressed. “They didn’t strip you of it. Just… they named an Interim champion like we predicted.” She added slowly. “But on the bright side, we were also right about who. It’s Luz. She’ll be a great champion and as soon as you’re cleared, you get your chance to unify them! They assured me of that!”
Even though the words made sense, Selena could see they were not having the full calming-effect she wanted them to have on Deanna. Rather, she watched the redhead grow more and more dejected, sitting back down in the couch.
“And… Enigma?” she asked weakly.
“He’s…” Selena tried to recall. Breakdown had come and gone in a bit of blur with her beyond angry at learning of Mason’s actions against Deanna that some things had slipped her mind – the whole show little more than bullet points of matches and key segments in her memory. “He’s after The One now like I said last week – something about that happened. Him and his smoke.”
Deanna slowly nodded. “So… new champion. Enigma’s still running around…” she leaned back into the couch. “What good did I accomplish?” she shook her head. “Was like I was never there…”
“Deanna…” Selena tried, racking her brain for several seconds before something came to her. “If you had done nothing, tell me this… why do Amelia and Luz care so much?”
The question regained Deanna’s attention slowly, prompting Deanna to continue.
“And Polly! The woman you warred with? I’ve been trying to help her break that glass ceiling for her career! She’s lent her support to us too! She wishes you well! Wants you back in SCW too! And the fans! They love you, even though they hate me! And that’s you STILL wrestling with the Frost last name!”
Deanna opened her mouth to speak but slowly closed it without a sound.
“The point is…” Selena made one last try. “Is that you are missed in SCW by many people. Just because Enigma is still around doesn’t mean you failed. Just because Mason’s using tactics that were old three years ago doesn’t mean you’re the same woman as you were back then. This is just… just a bump in the road for you. When you come back, you’ll fight for your title! Hell… If I could draw Luz and become the new Interim champion, I’d defend it on YOUR behalf-“
She hadn’t meant to let that one slip, but seeing the redhead’s eyes widen in surprise made her jaw clench at the realization.
“Wow…” Isabella spoke. “That’s… actually, rather sweet… isn’t it?” she eyed Deanna. “I don’t know what all this really means.”
Casting a glance at Izzy for a moment, Deanna’s eyes found Selena’s once more. “I… I need to go think.” She spoke quietly, pushing herself out off the couch and walking past Selena quietly to head up the stairs to her room, leaving the platinum-blonde with the brunette.
“That’s the second Springs woman that’s walked away from me today.” Selena sighed, her eyes on the path Deanna had walked. “Maybe I’m cursed or something…”
“It all sounded very sweet.” Isabella tried, standing up to walk the few steps to Selena. “Same with the shrubbery and the window.” She added. “You mean well, Selena. That’s what’s important.”
“Yeah.” Selena sighed, her eyes moving to where she could see the broken, panelled window – just in time to see the handymen outside begin tearing it out to replace it with a brand new one.
“I just wish it didn’t keep exploding in everyone else’s face when I do…”
